Residents at a care home in Epsom had the chance to get up close with all creatures great and small when they were visited by a host of farmyard animals.

The Care UK team at Appleby House on Longmead Road invited local farm, Miller’s Ark, to lead a ‘show and tell’ workshop with residents.

A host of interesting animals, including miniature donkeys, goats, sheep, and a number of feathered friends, were among those that residents could meet. As part of the session, Miller’s Ark provided interesting facts on each of the individual animals, and residents were also able to handle and stroke the friendly creatures.

Home manager, Shona Bradbury, said: “We are always looking to plan interesting and exciting activities for residents, and as so many have a keen interest in nature and wildlife, we invited Millers Ark along to provide a fun animal therapy session.

“It proved to be a real success, and you could see from residents’ reactions just how engaged and fascinated they were by the chance to get so close to such a varied collection of animals. Not only did the workshop fit really well with our ‘Activity Based Care’ approach here at Appleby House, it was also fantastic to see the smiles on everyone’s faces, and we believe it provided real therapeutic benefits for residents – especially those living with dementia.”

Appleby House has been designed to deliver the very best standards of care and to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives. The home provides residential and specialist dementia care, as well as short term respite.
